Whistler Question

Postby greasepiece on Wed Mar 10, 2010 11:50 am

Planning a trip to Whistler in Late May around the 26th for a wedding. I have just noticed that the park opens on the 15th of May and all the other resorts arent open till June or July. Has anyone been there for opening spring season? is it worth going with the bike at that time? I was looking at the bike park website and it looks like there will only be a few runs open around then. Unfortunately im stuck with these dates. The lads are talking about going to Kamloops for a few days will that be worth the trip?

Hey Andy, ive been there for opening and its still a great place to ride, im sure 90-100% of the lower mountain trails will be open and that will keep anybody entertained for 2weeks easily... you have everything from beginner green trails to very advanced double black diamond... i cant remember the number of trails on the lower mountain but it must be close to 35, you wont be bored like...

ive not been to kamloops yet, so i cant comment...

see you there lad!!

Andy,

Like Pete says there is plenty ready and open on the first weekend in Whistler, it really depends on how fast the snow starts melting in May. They machine clear a lot of it but you certainly won't be looking for trails to ride.

As for Kamloops, it's much further into the interior and in the rain shadow of the coast mountains so doesn't get nearly as much snow as Whistler, however what is there does take longer to melt but you should be ok in terms of biking there as the local elevation is a lot lower than Whistler so the temprature will be a lot warmer.

It would be a mistake not to take the bike so bring your wheels fella and enjoy. give us a shout when you are there and we can head out on a spin.

hey man there is a nice gang of us based in vancouver for the year so just give us a shout and we can arrange a few spins to show you some proper BC riding. PM me and il give ya my Canadian number

the bike park at that time of year could be hit and miss but the lower half will be pretty much open, squamish and the shore will be mint and the other stuff in the lower mainland will be rockin around then as well.

Dont limit yourself to just the bike park (even though we will prob be up there every weekend over the summer anyway :D )

I've been over to Canada a few times during June and July. While there might be some snow around Whistler, Squamish will be free of the stuff. Its costal and low-lying and a fantastic much overlooked spot for mountain biking. It's about half an hour from Vancouver (maybe less these days with the new extended dual carridgeway for the Winter Olympics). Squamish must have over 100 cross country/all terrian trails in it. The start of each route is marked with signs and trail maps are available for the bike and outdoor shops in Squamish. You could easily spend a month there and not do the same trail twice. Just look out for the Bears
There's excellent bouldering and rock climbing in Squamish, if you are into that thing.

Hello,

Leaving over in Vancouver as well for the last two years and as the lads said there will be loads of mountain biking to do in May both in the bike park and around. Going to the north Shore is definitely worth it and also loads of trails in Squamish as well. Have a look at www.nsmb.com which is a good forum for more up to date info around the time you get over here.

Cheers
Conor
