Mountain Bike Club of Cork (MBCC) is Cork's newest mountain bike club, albeit with an old and well-remembered name.
The club has been revived by a small group of like-minded Cork bikers with the chief aim of becoming a big group of like-minded Cork mountain bikers. The goals of the club are to get more people out on their bikes and enjoying having fun in the hills and in the woods regardless of experience, interests or abilities. We aim to cater for all avenues of what is quite a diverse sport, but primarily for the kind of cross-country (XC) spins that back in the days before everything had to have a label were just called "mountain biking". We're into long exploratory epics when we have the time, and short fun-packed blasts when we don't.
The decision to reestablish the club was in part prompted by the recognition that although other disciplines of cycling and of mountain biking itself are well catered for in Cork and in Munster organizations, there is no club that caters for mountain bikers who have an interest in developing their all-round off-road skills and general fitness. MBCC aims to cater for all mountain bike disciplines, among them downhill (DH), dirt jumping, trials and street - but hopes also to restore XC back to the glory it enjoyed in the early days of mountain biking in Ireland. XC is where it all started in the late eighties and should still be the introduction to new riders to learn the basics of mountain biking. We believe that a mountain biker should be able to ride every discipline even though they might have a preference for one in particular.
Off the bikes, we intend to work on finding and building new trails, maintaining old favourite routes, organizing killer events and becoming a voice for Cork mountain bikers.
MBCC has made the conscious choice to resurrect an old club name in the hope of resurrecting the old club spirit - some of our die-hards had their interest in mountain biking first kindled by the club's original incarnation, many moons ago. In the intervening years some things have changed but the love for biking and all the muck-covered craic that it entails is still strong. We're hoping that we now have an opportunity to transfer that passion into a club that will allow for the development of mountain biking as a sport in Cork, and maybe even for the interest of a whole new generation to be sparked.
See ye all on the trails!
